$2.1m St Helens traffic lights to be switched on today

MONTHS of consultation, design work and construction will come to fruition this morning when traffic lights are switched on outside the St Helens State School.

Maryborough MP Bruce Saunders said the $2.1 million project would come to an end when the lights on Maryborough–Hervey Bay Rd are turned on.

“It took a while to get all the drawings out to make sure it’s done right,” he said.

Mr Saunders said he drove the project after hearing concerns from school staff who were forced to dangerously exit the school during peak times.

“It’s a great day for me because I gave a strong commitment that we’d get it fixed,” he said. “It’s about safety of the students, parents and drivers.”

Mr Saunders said the lights would not delay motorists outside of peak school pick-up and drop-off times.

“If no one is coming and going from the school the lights will stay green.”
