More than $50,000 raised for palliative care

TIRELESS fundraiser Margaret Elford and her team have raised more than $50,000 in just 10 months for palliative care.

The former nurse has dedicated herself to helping local volunteer organisation Fraser Coast Palliative Care buy new equipment.

"With all the people in the Fraser Coast who need palliative care we will need to keep going," she said.

"A lot of the patients when I was nursing wanted to go home, to be with their relatives and in a home environment."

Ms Elford said the Maryborough Sports Club kicked off the fundraising with a $1000 donation and played host to the fundraising bingo sessions she organised.

"They've been very helpful, they've given us the club free of charge," she said.

"David and his staff have been really good.

"The community have been right behind us."

Ms Elford, who has also organised raffles, tombolos and private donations, said money raised had so far brought 10 beds, four wheelchairs, a hoist, air mattresses, pressure mattresses and oxygen concentrators.

She said Fraser Coast Palliative Care lends the items to people in need.

Palliative bingo is on every Sunday and Tuesday morning at the Maryborough Sports Club, excluding Melbourne Cup Day.
