More success for young Chad Schofield
RISING star Chad Schofield has added another feature race to his rapidly growing list of wins, piloting Outback Joe to victory in yesterday's Group 2 $400,000 Adelaide Cup at Morphettville.
The success followed the 20-year-old's triumph on speedster Lankan Rupee in Saturday's Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.
Trained by Nigel Blackiston, Outback Joe appreciated the solid pace in the race created by last year's winner Rialya who applied plenty of pressure to race favourite and leader Big Memory.
Despite being tackled by Perth Cup winner Black Tycoon nearing the post, the son of former champion mare Let's Elope proved the better stayer, holding off Black Tycoon and Base who battled on for third.
Schofield said he was thrilled to win such a prestigious race on his first visit to Adelaide.
"What a great honour to win the Cup," he said.
"It's my first time in Adelaide and what a brave win."
Blackiston was full of praise for the young jockey, and said he had been confident Outback Joe, the best-backed runner in the race, would have no trouble getting the 3200m.
"I was never worried about him (Outback Joe) running the two miles, I knew my horse would love the distance," Blackiston said.
The winner started at $7.60, with Sportingbet's Andrew Brown saying the agency had written "more tickets for Outback Joe than any other horse in the race".
The online bookmaker reacted to the win by slashing the horse's price for next month's Sydney Cup from $61 to $31.
