Acutt's three-decade Noosa Tri tradition still alive
TRIATHLON: When a young Ron Acutt arrived at the Sunshine Coast for his first Noosa Triathlon, the event didn't have the fanfare it has now.
"It was very different to what it is now,” Acutt said.
"I found a place to camp and all there was was a little sign that said there'd be an event the next day.
"I wasn't overly happy being woken up early while they set up transition.
"They set up transition on the same day - these days they have a cast of thousands working for two weeks.”
It was Acutt's third triathlon. He previously competed at events at Bundaberg and the Gold Coast, and this would be his first crack at Noosa.
The 36th Noosa Triathlon will be held tomorrow.
It will be the 34th time the Hervey Bay Triathlon Club member' will compete.
He missed the first two years of the event but hasn't missed a date since.
"The swim was in the creek, the bike went to Cooroy and the run went back to the Tewantin Hotel,” Acutt recalled.
Acutt has spent three decades involved with triathlon.
In September, he represented Australia at the ITU Gold Coast Grand Final.
It was the third time he competed in a world championship triathlon at the Gold Coast, after previous appearances in 1991 and 2009.
"I've taken it easy since the worlds,” he said. "This time I'm just going around.”
