Aged former Meals on Wheels building to be demolished

THE former Meals on Wheels kitchen in Gossner St Hervey Bay, will be demolished.

"The building served Meals on Wheels for many years until it moved into a bigger purpose-built facility in Islander Road," Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell said.

"Unfortunately given the age and condition of the building it would need extensive refurbishment to convert it from a kitchen to create a building suitable for use by community groups.

"There is also a lack of appropriate parking and amenities, especially to cater for disabled visitors, and the number of people that could attend group meetings or functions.

"And the land is needed as part of the stormwater system that runs behind the building."

Rather than refurbish the building, the council is investigating a number of sites to develop the purpose-built facility for community and service groups.

It would contain space for groups to store equipment and would also have meeting and function space.
