Alexander Downer gets London gig as High Commissioner

FORMER Howard Government Foreign Minister Alexander Downer is expected to be appointed High Commissioner to London, replacing former Labor Premier Mike Rann.

The appointment, yet to be officially confirmed, was reported on Tuesday by Fairfax, with current High Commissioner, Mr Rann, expected to be moved to another diplomatic post in Italy.

If confirmed, the appointment would be the Abbott government's second posting of a former senior Liberal to diplomatic positions, after Nick Minchin was placed in a United Nations role in New York.

Mr Minchin, a former Howard government Finance Minister, was a last-minute replacement for the Labor appointed former Victorian Premier Steve Bracks for the role.
