Alleged flood fraudster remanded in custody in Maryborough

A MARYBOROUGH man accused of dishonestly claiming disaster recovery payments from the government has been remanded in custody.

David Edward Reid, 38, fronted the Maryborough Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning on six charges of dishonestly gaining benefit, as well as several unrelated charges of fraud, stealing and drug possession.

He is accused of dishonestly claiming more than $1400 in disaster recovery payments after the floods in February while he was living in Bundaberg.

Magistrate John Smith adjourned all of the charges to next month but remanded Reid in custody.

He said he was concerned the latest alleged offences of fraud, stealing and drug possession were committed while he was on bail for the dishonesty charges.

Defence lawyer Trinity McGarvie told the court Reid suffered a brain injury at a young age and was "extremely disadvantaged".

He had been living in Maryborough.
