Pauline Hanson "like Nelson Mandela"? Nine thinks so

A MAJOR media outlet is circulating a meme comparing controversial politician Pauline Hanson to revered South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela.

Channel Nine's Today show circulated the meme on social media and asked people for their thoughts on it.

The image shows the Logan One Nation leader and newly elected Queensland senator smiling into the camera with the words: "They tried to put her in jail like Nelson Mandela but she came back and came back stronger."

The meme comment carries both the Today and Nine Network logos.

The meme is referencing Ms Hanson spending three months in jail in 2003 on fraud charges.

On appeal, she was released and cleared of any wrongdoing.

Nelson Mandela, however, spent 27 years in a brutal prison.

He was jailed for fighting against the South African apartheid government's shocking human rights abuses against black South Africans.

Mr Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and became the instrumental figure in the abolition of apartheid four years later.

Known as the "father of the nation", Mr Mandela served as the country's president from 1994 to 1999.

He died in December, 2013.

In contrast, Ms Hanson is a right-wing anti-immigration campaigner.

She contested elections in 1996, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and this year.

The Nine Network has yet to respond to ARM Newsdesk's request for comment but social media users have not held back in sharing their views of the artwork.

"Makes me feel ill. Nelson Mandela gave entire life fighting 4 freedom of his people against oppression. Hanson is opposite," Greg MarineLab wrote on Twitter.

Fellow Twitter user TruthSeeker agreed.

"Many of Hanson's supporters wouldn't have spit on Mandela had he been on fire. Their using his name is grotesque."

Alexander Muenchow said Ms Hanson and Mr Mandela were poles apart.
