Bub comes home after two heart surgeries in Brisbane
BRINGING a baby home for the first time is always a special moment - but the moment was even more beautiful for former Hervey Bay woman Kelly Wilson.
She and husband Paul, who now live in Brisbane, were thrilled to bring their daughter Emily Grace home after the baby endured two rounds of surgery on her heart, the first just two days after she was born, to treat hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
"She's doing really well," Kelly said.
As well as two heart surgeries, Emily also had to endure countless blood tests, a cardiac catheter and many other procedures.
To mark each step along the way, Emily was given a string of beads, with each bead representing one of the procedures she had to go through.
Kelly said it was hard to watch her daughter go through the surgeries but knowing it would make her better did make it somewhat easier.
She said looking at the hundreds of beads made her very proud of how far Emily had come.
"In the future the beads will also help us explain it to her," Kelly said.
Emily will need more heart surgery when she is older, but the family is excited by the thought of having a few surgery-free years to look forward to.
