UPDATE: Crews still extinguishing Booral grass fire

UPDATE: OVERNIGHT showers may have come too late to provide any relief for fire crews still containing a blaze in Booral.

The grass fire, which broke out on Saturday morning, is currently being contained by about four fire crews.

A QFES spokesman said crews were carrying out final extinguishings along the breaks created last night.

Another two crews are en route to the scene.

Firefighters spent the evening creating breaks in the fire in order to stop it spreading further north.

So far, more than 26 hectares of land has been burned.

EARLIER (SATURDAY 6.48PM): FIRE crews will remain on alert through the night to monitor a bushfire in Booral.

The blaze, which ignited about 10.15am on Sarturday morning, led to more than 20 fire crews being deployed to stop the blaze reaching rural properties in the vicinity of River Heads Rd and Tremon Rd.

About 13 crews are currently on scene.

A QFES spokesman said fire crews were backburning the western corner of the area to secure it in for the night.

He told the Chronicle a smoke warning issued for the area would remain in place.

Residents with respiratory conditions are advised to keep windows and doors closed and keep medication nearby.

EARLIER (SATURDAY 4.37PM): SIXTY-four people are now involved in the fight against a large bushfire still burning in Booral.

A bulldozer is pushing a break in the fire to the north.

The Chronicle understands up to 26 hectares of land has been burned as of 4.30pm.

A QFES spokesman said crews were continuing backburning operations.

EARLIER (SATURDAY 2.00PM): A BULLDOZER is en route to River Heads Rd to help put a break in a massive grass fire in Booral.

Fire crews are still backburning and working to contain the blaze, which threatened homes on Saturday morning.

No properties are currently under threat.

The fire has been separated into northern and southern sectors to allow firefighters to better contain the blaze.

A QFES spokesman said heavy winds are carrying the fire towards Sandrabarbara Dr.

A smoke alert for the area still remains in place.

EARLIER (SATURDAY 1.15PM): UP TO 15 crews are combatting a major fire which threatened homes at Booral on Saturday morning.

While no properties are under currently under threat, firefighters are taking no chances.

Heavy smoke can be seen at Booral, River Heads, Wondunna and Urangan.

The Chronicle understands the blaze broke out about 10.15am in the vicinity of River Heads Rd and Tremon Rd.

About 15 fire crews, including 12 rural crews, three urban crews, a command vehicle and several senior officers, are on the scene.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said about 10 hectares of land has been burned by noon.

Several houses and sheds in the River Heads area were under threat at the time but have now been declared safe.

The QFES spokesman said crews were currently backburning to contain the fire.

A smoke alert has been issued for the River Heads area due to the blaze reducing visibility and air quality.
