Man feared for home in 'suspicious' Gladstone fire

A FIREFIGHER who was first on the scene of a blaze that gutted a house in Barney Point late on Monday evening said a "suspicious container" was found in the aftermath.

Investigation are expected to continue at fire light, which will be headed by Gladstone's Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB).

UPDATE 10.50pm:

A neighbour who lives beside the house that went up in flames late this evening said he saw flames and smoke coming out of the roof.

Nathan Counsel said he was a "little bit" worried that his own house was under threat as the blaze gutted the inside of the vacant house.

"It seems pretty suss because there hasn't been anyone there [in the house] in a while," he said.

It's understood the fire started in a bedroom and travelled throughout most of the house.

It's also understood the house has been vacant for nearly a year, and after this incident, it may need to be knocked down.

Earlier, a man said his neighbour, who lives in the adjoining house heard "a loud explosion" before the fire took hold.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious.

EARLIER:

EMERGENCY services, including police and fire crews, have rushed to a house fire at 31 O'Conell St, Bareny Point.

It's understood the house fire occurred in a vacant block.

But a police spokesperson at the scene said they are treating the fire as "suspicious".

One witness said "the flames were huge".

Another man said a neighbour of his, who lives in a n adjoining block, said he heard a "loud explosion" before the fire broke out.
