EDITORIAL: Breathing life into our tourism sails
EDITORIAL: Hervey Bay clubs have been spending up to attract new customers recently, with the multi-million dollar RSL renovations, and the golf club's refreshed interior - and don't forget that Maryborough's got some big projects on the boil too with its own RSL renovations and the planned Mary Harbour.
But the Hervey Bay Boat Club's new $70 million project will be the icing on the cake for the region's hospitality and tourism sector.
With a development of this size, it's no surprise that it's taken years of behind-the-scenes work by the club's board, but their tenacity in pursuing the project through three successive governments should be applauded.
When the 100-room hotel and conference centre goes ahead, it will breathe new life into the harbour area, not to mention creating potentially hundreds of jobs.
It could even be a lure to new businesses - perhaps even attracting enough demand to bring more ferry services from Fraser Island direct to the boat harbour.
While there are a few steps to go before it becomes a reality, it's clear that this project is a whale of an opportunity for the Fraser Coast.
