Brookfield on board and ready to play

THE Wide Bay Buccaneers' marquee man Ben Brookfield wasted little time meeting his new teammates.

The former Launceston City player-coach landed at Hervey Bay Airport last week and went straight to a training session.

While the Englishman initially struggled to adapt to the Fraser Coast's sweltering heat, Brookfield was simply happy to get on the training park.

"I've been encouraged by what I've seen, we should have a good team to compete," Brookfield said.

"It's been about 5-6 days (since Brookfield arrived) now. I've had a few training sessions and I'm getting used to running around in this heat."

Brookfield will feature in the revamped Football Queensland Premier League as a player in the men's senior competition, and as coach for the under-18s.

While they have spent much of preseason training together, the 26-year-old said he was keen to spend time with new playing group and pass on the lessons he learned in a tough 2017 NPL Tasmania season.

"To be honest, with it being my first NPL senior gig I wasn't going to play," Brookfield said.

"I was going to write it off as a year of learning and coaching. We got a few injuries and there was a spot I could add to the team, and that's the only reason I was going to play."

That brief return reignited the competitive fire.

"I really enjoyed last season and I've got a lot more to offer," Brookfield said. "If I can bring some of the younger boys along as well it'd be great."

The Buccaneers will travel to Rockhampton on Saturday to face Mackay Crusaders in a preseason friendly. The junior teams will travel south to play the Sunshine Coast Fire.
