Bundy winners have a whale of a time in Hervey Bay

FIFTY Year 5 students from St Patrick's Catholic Primary School had a whale of a time on the adventure cruises boat yesterday after winning the Junior Whale Whisperer Program.

The competition was held mid this year by Fraser Coast Opportunities and Tourism and Events Queensland to coincide with the whale watching season.

It was open to eight schools from Rockhampton to Brisbane.

St Patrick's Catholic Primary School Year 5 teacher Damian Fox said his students put in a lot of effort into the project.

"We created a book titled 'A Whale Tale' where each student wrote a creative story and drew a picture of a whale, mermaid or dolphin to win the boat excursion and a trip to the Discovery Sphere to learn more about the Fraser Coast," Mr Fox said.

Hervey Bay whale expert Andrew Ellis from Fraser Coast Opportunities said the program was a fantastic way to educate and excite Queensland children about the incredible marine life on their doorstep.

"We had to go a long way to spot the whales," he said.

"We started at 8.30am and ended at 1.45pm and went right up to Station Hill before coming back along the coastline.

"The kids saw about five whales and they were all excited as they've been looking forward to this trip for a long time."
