Burgeoning whale numbers set to increase

MORE whales have been seen during this season than in previous years and the population is expected to continue increasing into the future.

Chronicle photographer Valerie Horton was onboard a boat, had a close encounter with a humpback whale along the eastern coastline of Fraser Island at the weekend.

Fraser Coast Opportunities tourism manager Robbie Cornelius said during the whale season, from July to November, humpback whales could be seen in huge numbers on the western and eastern sides of Fraser Island.

"Whales encountered on the eastern side are generally on the migratory path heading either north or south and given the protection and conservation measures in place for humpback whales, the population will increase," he said.
