Butchulla artist helps to bridge gap
BUTCHULLA artist Karen 'Kutcha' Hall has used her talent to voice her message about including indigenous Australian culture in Fraser Coast hospitals.
At St Stephen's Hospital in Urraween yesterday, Karen displayed her artwork in the foyer as part of the 'bridging the gap' campaign.
The hospital's campaign highlights the goals to give every indigenous Australian the same opportunity as other Australians to live a long, healthy and happy life by 2030.
Karen said to her, 'the gap' symbolised the exclusion and oppression of her people in all acts of life including health care.
"We do feel judged, criticised for our lifestyles and cultures," Karen said.
"Having recognition and understanding of our backgrounds is very important."
