20 year island fight pays off for Butchulla community

THE Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation has officially opened its office below the Mantra Hotel in Urangan.

The office, which has been operational since March this year, will be used as a central hub for Butchulla people to better connect with K'Gari, otherwise known as Fraser Island.

The official opening included a welcome to country, traditional Butchulla dancers and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Butchulla Elder and representative Aunty Joyce Bonner said the Butchulla people had been fighting for 20 years to have Fraser Island recognised a K'Gari.

She said it was important to have an office where Butchulla people could work so closely with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, to ensure the country is respected, as well as passing on Butchulla knowledge.

"We are saltwater people, it's our connection to our country on K'Gari," Aunty Joyce said.

"We work to make sure our knowledge and stories are passed on."
