Careless littering causes graphic platypus death

SOBERING images of a platypus that was strangled by a plastic ring are serving as a stark reminder to Sunshine Coast residents to be mindful of their waste.

Javier Pastor de Frutos was shocked when he came across the dead platypus at Wappa Falls on Tuesday, and said it would have been a terrible death.

COURT REJECTS APPEAL AGAINST SEKISUI DEVELOPMENT

The graphic photos show the decomposing creature on the banks of Wappa Falls with what appears to be a rubber band around its neck.

"This is what happens when you leave some garbage anywhere and think … it doesn't matter," Mr de Frutos said.

Wildlife Rescue Sunshine Coast founder Claire Smith said careless littering could result in similar animal deaths.

"Wappa Falls is a well visited spot by locals as well as visitors from further afield," she said.

"Most will never have seen the platypus that live in that area, they are illusive and secretive creatures. This picture is not how we want to see the platypus that live in our waterways.

"The message is simple: be responsible, dispose of your rubbish properly and prevent needless deaths."
