Census: Higher divorce rate and 'no religion' for Coast

FRASER Coast residents experience higher rates of divorce and the average household is getting by on less than $1000 a week, early Census data has revealed.

A snapshot of Census results, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics yesterday, showed the divorce rate in the region was above both the state and national average.

In Hervey Bay, there were 5093 divorcees which is 2.2% higher than the Queensland average and 3% above the national average.

In Maryborough, 4996 people said they were divorced.

Perhaps unsurprisingly in an aging community, the region had a higher rate of widows than the state and national figures with 2741 in Maryborough and 3366 in Hervey Bay.

This was about a 2% increase on the national average of 5.2%.

After English, the second most commonly spoken language on the Fraser Coast was German.

According to the survey results, the average household (just above three people on average) is living off $899 a week in Maryborough, significantly lower than the Queensland average of $1402.

In Hervey Bay, it was slightly higher at $911.

There are about 10% more households in the region living on less than $650 a week compared to the state average of 19.5%.

Only 4.9% of households in Maryborough are earning a gross weekly income of $3000, which is a huge drop from the Queensland average of 14.4%.

It's only slightly higher in the Bay at 5.3%.

In the 2016 Census, there were 53,035 people in Hervey Bay and 51,0102 (State Electoral Divisions).

Of these, 47.8% were male and 52.2% were female. There were 51,102 people in Maryborough (State Electoral Divisions) with 50.4% of those male and 49.6% female.
