Chamber of Commerce to run Tech Challenge

THE Maryborough Chamber of Commerce will take over the running of the Tech Challenge to prevent the event from potentially moving to the showgrounds.

The announcement was made yesterday, and MCC president Craig Winter told the Chronicle the event wasn't making a profit or classed as a tourism event.

He campaigned hard to take the event from the council to keep it in the Maryborough CBD.

Mr Winter has already cut costs and gained new sponsorship.

He hopes to eventually turn a profit so the money can be funnelled back into the heritage city.

"We want to recapture the enthusiasm and excitement of the event," Mr Winter said.

"I think people have come to see the Tech Challenge as a council event when it should be seen as a community event with strong links to the CBD."

The chamber will call for people to be on an advisory committee, to bring ideas on how to grow the event and talk with CBD businesses to get them involved.

The change came after a stakeholders' meeting organised by Fraser Coast Opportunities last year to discuss the future of the event.

The council and FCO will still continue to underwrite the event financially, and financial help will still be sought from the State Government to grow the event.
