'Cheeky, happy' man mourned after fatal crash

TRIBUTES have flowed for a former Sunshine Coast security guard who was killed in a motorcycle crash on Friday.

Darren Crawford, 46, was travelling northbound on the Sunshine Motorway, about 1km north of the Marcoola exit, when he crashed about 12.50pm.

He died on arrival at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Friends of Mr Crawford have described the father and grandfather as "happy" and "energetic".

Shay Upton was friends with Mr Crawford, known affectionately as Shorty, for eight years and said he "was a guy that loved life, full of energy and very cheeky".

"He was always there for me when I needed someone to talk to - taken from us too soon."

On Facebook, Andrew Howell described Mr Crawford as a "very talented and passionate martial artist who helped and inspired many throughout your years of dedication to our club".

Others shared their condolences to Mr Crawford's family.

"RIP Darren. Deepest sympathy to his family and friends," wrote Lou Lux.

Mr Crawford previously worked at the Palmwoods Hotel as a security guard where he met Fiona Carlyle, a patron who became his friend.

Ms Carlyle said Mr Crawford "always had a smile for those he knew".

According to police, Mr Crawford hit a guardrail after leaving the northbound lane, which sent his bike down the side of the road.
