Council asking volunteers to lend a hand with events

THE 2013 events calendar is shaping to be one of the busiest in the region's history and the council's events team is calling on Fraser Coast residents to lend a hand.

Following the success of the AJ13 Scout Jamboree, Ulysses AGM and CMCA Rally, volunteers are needed to help  organise and stage a number of signature events across the Fraser Coast.

These include:

  • Relish Food and Wine Fest (Saturday, June 8)
  • The World's Greatest Pubfest (Sunday, June 9)
  • Mary Poppins Festival (Sunday, June 30)
  • The Hervey Bay Whale Festival (the month of August)
  • RACQ Technology Challenge (September 14 and 15)

Councillor for sport, recreation, open spaces and events Darren Everard said volunteering in local events was a great way to help and become involved in the community.

"We have volunteers that have been helping with community events and festivals for the better part of a decade," he said.

"Our events are growing bigger every year and we need more people to get onboard and lend a hand.

Councillor Everard is a familiar face at most events across the Fraser Coast, helping with everything from logistics to handing out drinks and road closures.

"I really enjoy working with other passionate members of the Fraser Coast community," he said.

"The jobs vary from setting up marquees and market stalls, to greeting visitors to liaising with artists and performers and everything in between.

"It's a fantastic way to learn some new skills, meet some new people and have a little fun in the process."
