Gladstone business to win contract off out-of-town company
RACHEL Townsend thinks the council's new local content policy is "awesome" after looking like a sure thing to win her first tender, despite being $270 more expensive than the current supplier.
Gladstone Regional Council staff recommended councillors use her business Office National Gladstone as the stationery provider over Staples, the provider it has used for the past six years.
The councillors agreed to go with Office National Gladstone's tender at the finance and corporate governance committee on Tuesday and, if it is approved in the next general meeting, the council will part ways with Staples.
The decision was backed by the fact the owners of the business live and work in Gladstone compared to Staples, which has a store in Gladstone but a head office at Mascot, New South Wales.
Mrs Townsend did not believe her tender was more expensive than Staples because she also included cheaper alternatives for the premium products the council requested.
The mother of two said the local content policy was a long time coming.
"Staples is not a locally owned company and although they employ people, our money goes back into the community," she said.
"We pay rates on our business and on our home."
Office National has been in Gladstone for 27 years and Staples has been here for more than 20 years.
Mrs Townsend said it was the first tender she had submitted and was delighted she would likely succeed.
"It's a big contract for me and it will help us support other local businesses," she said.
She said she put in her cheaper options because she saw the council as a community business.
"I want my rates to be spent the best way possible," she said.
"I've been running this business for seven years and have a fair bit of product knowledge and if I can get the council to try a different product that saves money, then that is a good thing for everyone."
Staples would not comment on the impact of the local content policy on its business until the official decision was made at the next general meeting.
