Gluten-free foodie shop and cafe opens in M'boro

THE big news doing the rounds on Adelaide St is the newly opened gluten-free foodie shop and cafe, Mitchell's Modern Pantry.

Maryborough couple Matt and Carmel Mitchell have returned to the Heritage City to put their dream of opening the business into action.

"We owned a home icecream business in Toowoomba for four years and had a ton of people ask about gluten-free icecream," Matt said.

"It pushed us to make our dream a reality."

The idea was first sparked due to Carmel's daughter, Larissa, being gluten intolerant.

"There was just no choice at the supermarkets and even the cafes, so we started researching," Matt said.

"We will cater for everyone - gluten intolerance, lactose free, anyone with an allergy, but having said that we are a foodie shop. "All the ingredients are separate and you can come in with the recipe in your head and grab a little scoop of this and a scoop of that or buy in bulk to store at home - you can get a whole recipe in little increments."

Mitchell's Modern Pantry bulk stocks carob goodies, yogurt-coated fruit, dried fruits, an array of spices, nuts and flavoured nuts, bulk honey and cereals.

"You can come in and make your own special breakfast blend or check out the gluten-free room of cake and bread mixes, and raw foods like Agave nectar, coconut nectar and Pana chocolate," Matt said.

Stop in for morning or afternoon tea and try what's in the gluten-free cake and chocolate cabinet, enjoy an organic or decaf Merlo coffee or sample some Tea by Birdy.

"During our opening customers will have the chance to win prizes including a Naughty Goat hamper and Food To Nourish hamper," Carmel said.

The pantry will also stock costume jewellery, Kakadu candles, Naughty Goat products, cook books including children's books and 4 Ingredients signed copies.

Mitchell's Modern Pantry at 220 Adelaide St, Maryborough, opened on Monday. Phone 4123 2573.
