Court told of diamond deception
A HERVEY Bay woman who allegedly conned someone out of $1300 by selling a phony diamond ring on eBay will face trial in the Hervey Bay District Court.
Sarah Jade Kaufman, 22, advertised a diamond ring for sale on the eBay website and allegedly provided a fake certificate of authenticity to a prospective buyer.
The buyer was a Western Australian resident who contacted Kaufman and expressed her interest in the ring.
Kaufman allegedly provided the woman with a fake certificate of authenticity for the diamond and the potential buyer deposited the cash into an account for the item.
She then ceased contact with the complainant, who never received the ring.
Kaufman, an Eli Waters resident, was committed to stand trial in the Hervey Bay District Court charged with fraud.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Jeanette Grigoris tendered evidence in the form of witness statements, emails between Kaufman and the complainant, a Gemological Institute of America certificate for the property and money transfer details to the court.
Kaufman was also fined $200 in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to one count of failing to provide her personal details at the police station.
She will appear in the Hervey Bay District Court at a date to be determined.
