Damage continues after Matthew
MATTHEW is no longer a hurricane, having been downgraded to a post- tropical cyclone. Swollen, rising rivers could cause a week of death and destruction, however, the North Carolina governor said as the dete- riorating storm headed out to sea. The US death toll is at least 19, including five caused by carbon monoxide fumes from a generator, and insured property losses are $5-8 billion. The death toll in Haiti has hit 1000 and thousands of people have been rescued from homes and cars after torrential rains from the most powerful Atlantic storm since 2007.
