Dancers flirt with Latin social group in Hervey Bay

KNOWN for its sensual hip action and sexy flair, Latin dance is gaining popularity on dance floors everywhere, even in Hervey Bay.

Grupo Latino started here in 2000 when Bob Campbell advertised for interested dancers on the Fraser Coast to form a group to promote Latin music, dance, culture and friendship.

The response was excellent with up to 40 people attending the initial meeting, and over time the Latin band Grupo Latino came to be with Vic Cerezo at the helm.

Dance classes started with Gail Patroney who continued as the dance instructor until the end of 2010.

President Marlene Dennis said all the members of Grupo Latino share the same interests and enjoy the social aspect of Latin dance.

"We don't do any competition dancing; we're merely a group of people who enjoys dancing.

"In the past the majority of our dance socials have been held at the Hervey Bay Sports and Leisure Centre but for the first time the next one is on at the Hervey Bay Boat Club.

"It's going to be a social event where members and friends of the group get together to dance and they can dress up if they wish to and have some fun."

Latin dancing, as Latin music, is sultry and physical.

Quick-paced rhythms and playful movements make the various Latin dances endlessly entertaining, sometimes even breathtaking.

The cha-cha is energetic and sassy; the rumba is the 'dance of love', and the samba is a lively Brazilian dance consisting of many jumps and turns.

You can dance with a partner or by yourself, and Marlene said many people who go to the socials go without a dance partner.

"You can do the salsa on your own, and we sometimes dance individually in a circle and have a bit of fun with it. Usually there are more females coming to our dance socials than men," she said.

Grupo Latino social dance is on this Saturday, starting at 7pm at the Hervey Bay Boat Club's Marloo Room.

Put on your dancing shoes, wear something Hispanic if you can and come and join the fun.

The ever-popular Mexicano (Jackie McDonald) provides music and tickets are $10 for members and $15 for non-members.

For tickets, phone Carlo on 0488 489 706.

Tickets are also available for sale at the door but only until 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome.

Regular classes have stopped as they no longer have a teacher and Marlene said it would be great if they could find another Latin dance teacher who could spare the time to take the dancers through their steps.
