Daughter leads Mum to follow her dreams

For Caboolture doctor Ghazal Khokar nothing makes her happier than seeing all her four children together.

"That's the best gift of all," the Caboolture Hospital emergency doctor said.

Although thanks to a twist of fate, Ghazal spends most of her time with her 23-year-old daughter Sehrish who actually led the pair to follow their dreams of becoming doctors.

Ghazal Khokar had put her dream of becoming a doctor on hold to raise her children but when her daughter Sehrish decided it was also her calling the pair began a journey together that not many mothers and daughters ever share.

This Mother's Day the Khokar family will celebrate Ghazal and her spirit which has supported each of her children to follow their dreams.

The two women, who both now work at the Caboolture Hospital - Ghazal in emergency and 23-year-old Sehrish in obstetrics and gynaecology - say their support for each other has helped them to achieve their dreams.

"I couldn't have done it without the support," Ghazal said.

"I was studying medicine in Melbourne with the rest of the family in Brisbane. The children helped out quite a lot - if I didn't have their support I would not have been able to do it."

For Ghazal tomorrow is a special time for family to be together "and for me to appreciate our wonderful children".

"Nothing makes me happier than seeing all the children together - that's the biggest gift of all," she said.

While love for each other is what binds them, laughter to is a gift the family also shares.

"Even though we didn't to the same university we came together during holidays to practice practical exam scenarios. We often ended up in great laughter instead," Ghazal said.

The bond between the two is no more evident than in them moving across town, from Brisbane's south side earlier this year when they received their posting to Caboolture Hospital.

Through the rapidly changing coronavirus impacts, the doctor duo have worked around each other's schedules, supporting one another.

"It was a stressful time early on when our whole way of life change," Ghazal said.

But tomorrow will be a chance for the family to come together and give their "Mum a few presents at home" Sehrish said.

"I like to show love for my mother through my everyday actions and helping her," Sehrish said.
