Don't change Hervey Bay's name, 85% say
THE idea of changing Hervey Bay's name to Newport Beach has been howled down by online readers with the vast majority branding the suggestion ridiculous.
One of the Chronicle's Facebook friends said you could slap a Ferrari badge on a Datsun, but it was still a Datsun.
"Our name is fine, the way we market our brand to the rest of the world is the real issue," he said.
"It's become stale and there's a real confusion in what our identity is supposed to be.
"We are a modern city competing against our Aussie neighbours and the rest of the world with no clear brand identity."
Another Facebook fan said Hervey Bay was well-known for the whales and if the name was changed, no one would know what was going on.
Among the avalanche of comments was one woman's view that a rose by any name would still smell the same and no name change was going to change our high council rates and high unemployment.
Website commenters suggested alternative names: Inala by the Sea for Hervey Bay and Detroit or Chicago for Maryborough.
In less than five hours, more than 430 votes were cast in our online poll asking whether the name should be changed and 85% said no.
But a small proportion of people thought the name change was a good idea and one person suggested consulting the Butchulla people.
