EDITORIAL: M'boro electorate will be watching

EDITORIAL: It's not strictly official, but it's clear congratulations are due to Bruce Saunders who is poised to take the chair as Member for Maryborough.

Mr Saunders' comments to the Chronicle on Monday were short and sweet, but we hope to hear him expand on them in the coming days.

During the election campaign he made some lofty promises, most notably re-opening pathology at Maryborough Hospital, and rebuilding TAFE.

While they might be difficult to achieve, it's clear those promises spoke to the people.

Now we must support him as he gets to work making it happen - and understand that they will not happen overnight.

No reasonable voter would expect the miraculous re-opening of Maryborough's pathology unit to happen over night, nor would they expect Mr Saunders' promised transport hub to materialise by next week.

But what we do expect is that Mr Saunders will start working immediately, and that he will be open, accountable and transparent about what he is doing to make those promises a reality.

And of course, if he wants to be re-elected, Mr Saunders must remember above all that effort counts in politics, but not as much as results.
