Fire, police and ambulance called to suspected house fire

FIRE, police and an ambulance crew headed to what was called in as a house fire in Urangan on Tuesday night.

Torquay Fire Station officer Neil Lesmond said two fire crews went to the home on King Street about 8pm only to discover it was a backyard fire.

"A mum and kids were having a backyard fire burning wood and old school books," Officer Lesmond said.

He said neighbours in the area raised the alarm after seeing smoke in the area believed to have been coming from the house.

By council law you are required to have a permit for a backyard fire over 2 metres.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services recommend residents take all rubbish to the dump including green waste rather than burning.
