UPDATE 2.30PM

RFS Northern River liaison Angela Daly said firefighters were chasing the "really challenging" blaze, but variable winds continue to push it in different directions, hindering their tireless efforts.

"Crews are chasing the fire...it is all that much more challenging given the many hundreds of kilometres of perimeter crews have to get contained."

The blaze is currently burning west in the area of Gallaghers Rd and Tullymorgan where crews are in property protection mode.

Firefighters and water bombing aircraft are also working the Woombah area where crews are ready to go into property protection mode where required.

A backburning operation has started at Iluka Rd, which remains closed due to the smoke as crews attempt to prevent the further spread of fire. The road is currently closed.

Southerly winds are forecast to continue this evening which are expected to turn southwesterly into tomorrow.

Building impact assessment teams are on the fire ground this afternoon, there are no confirmed reports of property loss at this stage.

UPDATE: 12pm

The Pacific Hwy has reopened, but conditions can and do change quickly and roads can close without notice as a result. Follow the directions of emergency services crews on scene.

WATCH AND ACT - MYALL CREEK FIRE (11am)

SITUATION

Fire behaviour was erratic overnight with continued activity in the Woombah and Ashby Heights areas. Crews were focused on property protection in these areas yesterday and overnight The area between Serendipity and Gap Road and west of New Italy came under threat in the early hours of the morning due to a southerly wind change and a significant area has burnt in the Bungjalung National Park. Over the day the fire will be moving under the influence of a southerly wind which will drive the fire towards Swan Bay, Woodburn and Evans Head areas. People in these areas are advised that if they are not prepared, their property is undefendable or their plan is to leave, leave early in the day.

For residents south of Tabbimoble if the path is clear leave towards Maclean or Grafton.  For residents north of Tabbimoble if the path is clear leave north towards Lismore.  Residents of Iluka are advised that there is fire on both sides of the Iluka Road.  Though conditions are pushing the fire away from the area residents are asked to stay up to date and if you have left the area it may not be safe to return. Significant amounts of smoke are impacting the areas of Swan Bay, Coraki and Woodburn. The Pacific Highway is currently open under traffic control, but be aware that roads may be closed at short notice.

UPDATE FROM RFS ON ASHBY AND WOOMBAH AREAS (9am)

CREWS had a challenging day on Tuesday when the Myall Creek fire took a six-kilometre run toward Ashby Heights and Woombah areas.

"The fire intensity and its run to Ashby Heights was extreme," RFS public liaison officer Angela Daly said.

"This type of fire activity is not something we've seen before."

Fire crews went into property protection mode around Crisp Dr, Ashby Heights and Woombah areas most of yesterday and long into the night.

Ms Daly said that there had been unconfirmed reports of houses being lost in yesterday's inferno across Ashby and Woombah.

"During this morning's briefing, we believe sheds, possibly caravans and a few cars were impacted, but we don't have confirmation about any houses being lost," she said.

"Building impact assessors will be coming in today so we'll know more then."

Meanwhile, the fire continues to cause grief despite a southerly change forcing it away from yesterday's fireground.

"This fire is burning through the west above Ashby Heights / Tullymorgan areas, and also up around Lewis Rd and Banana Rd areas," she said.

"Both sides of Mororo and both sides of Iluka Rd have fire burning, and it's taken a fair run north to the New Italy area overnight; it just will not give up."

Ms Daly said she couldn't stress enough how important it is for residents to stay safe and stay up to date.

"Iluka Road is closed but crews will try and open it if it's safe to do so. But if not, please hang tight," she said.

"If residents have left, please don't return because it's simply not safe. We can replace houses but not people."
