FRASER Coast councillor Rolf Light said council-operated caravan facilities offered an un-powered overnight site for as little as $26 for two people.

"It's important tourists stay in proper facilities where waste management and safety are adequate," Cr Light said.

He said camping in public places was a matter for the State Government, with a by-law in place making camping illegal in Fraser Coast parks, recreational areas and roadside.

"Fines do apply," Cr Light said.

Infringement notices could be issued to the offenders for camping overnight.
