Garage fire wakes residents after smoke alarms sound

TWO residents woke to find the garage attached to their house well alight in the early hours of Monday morning.

At 1.45am fire fighters from Torquay Fire Station responded to a house fire in Conondale Street, Torquay.

Crews arrived less than five minutes later to find the garage attached to the house to be well alight.

The two occupants of the house were woken by smoke alarms installed in the house and were able to evacuate the house safely.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Station Officer John Pappas said the incident outlined the importance of working smoke alarms.

"You shouldn't come to harm, if you have a working smoke alarm," Officer Pappas said.

The fire was contained to the garage.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
