Gerard O'Connell the Hervey Bay chamber's preferred mayor

GERARD O'Connell is the front-running choice among the Hervey Bay business community to be re-elected as mayor.

The Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce polled more than 100 members on who they supported to be mayor and what regional projects they would support.

Gerard O'Connell was the most popular with 68% while his councillor colleague Chris Loft attracted 22% of the vote.

Businessman Steve Coleman won 8% and Jannean Dean scored 2%.

Tinana resident Greg Schmidt did not receive any votes and Lee Carter was not a candidate at the time of the survey.

Chamber president Tim Powers said the group was interested to hear from its members about local projects and who was the favoured mayor.

"Five weeks out from the election we were also keen to hear from our members in regards who they support for Mayor," he said.

"We will ask this question of our members again closer to election day."

The Chamber will host the mayoral candidates at a breakfast on March 9.
