GoMA hosts Matisse art

BRISBANE'S prestigious Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) will be home this summer to the most comprehensive presentation of Matisse's drawings and prints ever mounted.

You have the chance to win tickets to the exhibition along with two nights' accommodation for two at Mercure Brisbane including a bottle of wine on arrival and daily breakfast, valued at $450.

This exciting exhibition will have art lovers flocking to Brisbane for the exclusive presentation of Matisse: Drawing Life showcasing works on paper by Henri Matisse, the famed painter, draftsman and sculptor.

It will feature early charcoal sketches through to pen and ink drawings with more than 300 works on show.

The major exhibition is organised with the co-operation of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and will run from December 3 this year until March 4 next year.

Queensland Art Gallery director Tony Ellwood said many people would know Matisse as the master of colour but this exhibition would reveal why he was also the master of line.

"Throughout his career, drawing underpinned all of his work, regardless of whether it was painting, sculpture or print," Mr Ellwood said.

"From early charcoal sketches through to the clear, sinuous lines of the later pen and ink drawings, Matisse used line to effortlessly evoke a face, object or scene.

"Along with Picasso, Henri Matisse was regarded by many as having decisively changed the direction of art in the early 20th century."

Accor is offering a special Art Lovers' package at its Brisbane Novotel, Mercure and Ibis hotels for the duration of the exhibition.

The package for two includes overnight accommodation, full buffet breakfast, tickets to the GoMA Matisse Exhibition, a glass of wine at the hotel Bar and a late checkout of 1pm.

Package prices per room per night start from $199 at Ibis, from $219 at Mercure and $239 at Novotel Brisbane.

Accor is also offering readers a summer special "Stay a little longer, save a little more" where guests staying two or more nights will save 10% and receive a free breakfast throughout the months of November, December and January.
