Synthetic green bowls over Burrum Heads club's members

BURRUM Heads Bowls Club members were chuffed on Wednesday when they showed off the beginnings of their new synthetic outdoor green to the MP who helped find $100,000 to construct it.

Club treasurer Paul Petrie said it could not have happened if MP Anne Maddern didn't lobby Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson to get the $100,000 grant from the government's Get Playing program.

"We were all very excited and invited Ms Maddern to come out to see our progress," he said.

Ms Maddern, who was pleased with the progress, said the bowls club was worthy of receiving the grant.

"I believe the reason they got the grant was that they had more people wanting to play bowls than they can accommodate on the previous field," she said.

The new green, which will cater for the 38-year-old club's 150 bowlers and visitors and look attractive for its 350 social members, will cost the club a total of $400,000.

Construction is expected to be finished by early October.
