Gun Sun could miss the season with hip injury
AFL: Gold Coast is unable to set a timeframe on Sam Day's return from a dislocated hip because the injury is so rare among AFL players.
The Suns were waiting until after Day had surgery before confirming the extent of the injury, but it is a potentially season-ending.
Football manager Marcus Ashcroft revealed Day also fractured some bone in his hip and is expecting a long period on the sidelines.
"It's a once in a lifetime injury, in footy circles anyway, we haven't heard of it before," Ashcroft told SEN radio this morning.
"Sam does have a fractured hip dislocation. His hip did dislocate, it took a bit of bone with it. So it is fairly significant.
"More than likely, we miss him for the majority of the year."
"Even our medical team can't remember a time when someone has done something as significant as this. It's more like a car accident injury."
Day crashed to the turf in agony after running for a mark in the opening quarter against Brisbane yesterday.
He received pain relief as he was taken from the field.
The injury is bad timing for the 24-year-old, who was having a perfect pre-season build-up on the back of a top-10 finish in the Suns' best-and-fairest last year.
Ashcroft said a more accurate prognosis of Day's recovery will be made after the operation.
"The surgery today is going to be more of an exploratory nature where they can check the exact extent of the damage.
"We know at this stage some bone has been damaged and taken away so once the surgeons get in there we'll know where it sits."
The Suns have been crippled by injuries the past two seasons and Day's absence is a massive blow for the expansion club, which is yet to play finals in six seasons.
The 24-year-old enjoyed a career-best season in 2017, finished 10th in the Suns' best and fairest.
Day's injury overshadowed David Swallow's comeback from injury in Gold Coast's 24-point win over Brisbane.
The Suns left out Gary Ablett even though Ashcroft said he is ready to play.
Ashcroft said the former captain will return in the third JLT series match.
