IT'S not a crocodile, it's just a dugong!

Isak Schabort from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, who was called to Pialba Beach at 3.15pm yesterday after a resident believed she spotted a crocodile, confirmed it was a dugong.

He said the mammal, which was close to the shore, was feeding on the seagrass and algae.

Mr Schabort also confirmed that the dugong was spotted a few days ago in the same area.

Resident Francis Blair, who made the call, thought she should report it after a previous alleged sighting in Scarness recently.

"I didn't think dugongs had a tail, but I'm glad it's confirmed now," she said.

Mr Schabort said all crocodile warning signs had been taken down because they could not confirm spotting it in the Bay.
