Narrow endorsement on plan to change name of Bay suburb

HERVEY Bay CBD could become a suburb in the future with Fraser Coast councillors endorsing a plan to progress changing the name.

At the meeting in Hervey Bay yesterday, councillors voted 6-5 to prepare a community consultation case in the hope of changing the name of the Pialba CBD to the Hervey Bay CBD.

Councillors in favour of the proposal said the name change was to provide the central Hervey Bay location with its own identity.

Fraser Coast Regional Council deputy mayor George Seymour led the discussion against the proposed name change.

"It would cause confusion - it would cost a lot of money and nobody has asked me for it," he said.

The new suburb, known as Hervey Bay CBD will be located between Boat Harbour Dr, Charles St, Hillyard St and Hunter St; and include the Hervey Bay PCYC, Freedom Park, Pialba Place Shopping Centre and University of Sunshine Coast.

The name change was endorsed with councillors George Seymour, Chris Loft, James Hansen. Denis Chapman and Anne Maddern voting against.
