Hervey Bay pool refurbishment to begin next week
WORK to start refurbishing the 50m pool at the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre is scheduled to begin early next week.
The $780,000 tender was awarded to L and V Project Pools last month and staff will officially hand over the site to work crews on Monday, July 22.
"The project includes removing the old fibreglass surfacing and relining the entire pool with pebblecrete," councillor for sport Darren Everard said.
"The lane lines will still be marked with tiling.
"When the crews remove the old lining, they will also inspect all of the underground piping to make sure it's still in suitable working order."
The water play area will also be refurbished, including a fresh coat of paint.
"We're also investigating options to add more features to the play area in the future," Cr Everard said.
The project is expected to be finished by end of October, weather permitting.
Work to refurbish the front entry, kiosk and pool administration area is also progressing well.
Mayor Gerard O'Connell said the $130,000 project includes building new office areas, refitting the kiosk with new benches and remodelling the entry to the aquatic centre.
"Metcalfe Constructions are completing this project and the work is progressing very well," he said.
"We anticipate that the work will be completed by the end of August.
"This will follow on from the new roof that's been built over the 25m outdoor heated pool," he said.
"We're completing the projects now so the aquatic centres are ready for the busy summer and school holiday period."
In the last financial year, almost 200,000 recreational and competitive swimmers visited and enjoyed a swim at council's pools in Hervey Bay and Maryborough.
