History rings out with creation of two replica Maheno bells
THINGS are heating up with the replica castings of the Maheno bell at Maryborough's Olds Engineering.
Maheno School, in New Zealand, sent the original bell to the foundry.
It was used on the World War One hospital ship, SS Maheno, which was found beached off Fraser Island in 1935.
Under tight security the bell was delivered to the foundry where on Friday, staff members poured the bronze for the second casting.
Once completed, students and staff from Maheno School will be on Fraser Island to unveil the replica, which will remain there, during this year's Anzac celebrations.
The second replica Maheno bell will go to the Queensland Maritime Museum in Brisbane.
