Home invasion and car theft ended by street sign

POLICE have charged a man with a string of offences following an incident in Margate yesterday evening.

It will be alleged around 5pm yesterday a man had armed himself with a knife and walked down Albert Street before entering a residence on the street and threatening a 61-year-old woman. The man is alleged to have demanded keys to a vehicle parked at the residence and the woman complied.

A 62-year-old man has then entered the dwelling to assist the woman and it will be alleged he was then threatened by the man with the knife who has forced him at knife point to the car before entering the vehicle and driving it away.

It will be further alleged he has then driven the car in a dangerous and erratic manner colliding with a number of other cars and objects before coming to a halt after hitting a traffic sign on Steve Irwin Way, Beerburrum.

The man was arrested at the scene and was later charged.

A 29-year-old Margate man was charged with two counts each of armed robbery and dangerous driving and one count each of going armed so as to cause fear, deprivation of liberty, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, entering a dwelling with intent, driving a vehicle without a licence, possession of dangerous drugs and possessing a drug utensil.

He is due to appear in the Redcliffe Magistrates Court today.
