Mr Pennington said since he took over the reigns five years ago, hospital wait times had improved dramatically.

"In 2010/2011 the waiting time for outpatients was 12 years," Mr Pennington said.

"It was three and a half years for endoscopies and elective surgeries.

"Today, the outpatients waiting list is nine months, to have an endoscopy is 12 weeks and elective surgeries is eight months."

He said the wait times were now among the lowest in the country and the Wide Bay had gone from being the worst, to the best in Queensland.

"In 2020 people will be writing about what we've done and we will be almost legendary in public health."
