Hundreds splash in to celebrate first day of pool reopening

THE long-awaited opening of the Maryborough Aquatic Centre attracted people in the hundreds, from babies to the elderly, on Saturday.

Even legend Hayden Kenny, the first manager of the pool in the 1960s turned up to put his stamp of approval on the historic event.

Fraser Coast mayor Gerard O'Connell said the Maryborough Aquatic Centre would energize the sporting community and life of the Fraser Coast.

"The buzz around this place today is the stuff that makes a community so vibrant- all ages coming together, it's a real link with our history," he said.

"We are now set up for renewed sporting greatness and community and lifestyle."

Entry to the new pool was free from 8am to 6pm.
