Adorable face of pre-Christmas tragedy
HE'S the adorable little face of a terrible pre-Christmas tragedy.
The 13-month-old toddler run over and killed by a maxi-taxi on the Gold Coast last week has been revealed as Dimitri Samai.
Dimitri was with his aunty and three older siblings when he was struck by the cab outside opposite their Excalibur Court home on the exclusive Sovereign Islands last Friday.
The aunty was believed to have been paying for the cab when Dimitri ran back across the road and was hit by the taxi as his siblings watched in horror from their driveway.
Distraught paramedics said Dimitri's injuries were 'non-survivable' and there was nothing they could do to save him.
His aunty and the taxi driver were taken to hospital in shock.
Dimitri's parents, Melinda and Dickson, were visiting their native Papua New Guinea when their son was killed and rushed home when told the awful news.
Police said it appeared to be just a terrible accident and charges against the cabbie were unlikely, with a report to be prepared for the Coroner.
A small shrine, including flowers and a wooden cross, has been set up on a neighbour's front lawn where the tragedy occurred.
Relatives have taken to Facebook to vent their grief.
"Dimi o baby why so soon …" one posted.
Another wrote: "Feeling broken … just lost someone special in my life'.
The toddler's funeral will be held on Sunday, according to a funeral notice today.
"Dimitri will forever be in our hearts," the notice read.
"Special thanks to all those who have sent public and private messages of love and support."
Gold Coast Cabs boss Benjamin Lee said the company was devastated by the tragedy and offered its sincere condolences to the family.
"We will continue to work closely with the police in their investigation and support the driver involved through this very difficult time," he said in a statement last week.
