India tour not a worry for Ashes preparation: Smith

AUSTRALIAN captain Steve Smith says this month's eight-game limited over tour of India will not derail his team's Ashes preparation.

Smith and his team has arrived on the sub-continent ahead of five 50-over clashes and three Twenty20 games between September 17 and October 13.

The Aussies begin the Test series with England on November 23 at the Gabba and the Australian skipper says there will be enough time for the team to ready itself to face the old enemy.

"I know before last Ashes series we had a one-day tour as well of India, much the same as this one, so I don't see any issue with it,” Smith said.

"We've got plenty of time when we get back home to play a few Shield games and get ready for the Ashes as well.”

The Test series beween India and Australia earlier this year had a number of controversies - mostly involving Smith and counterpart Virat Kohli.

Smith said he expected a far less fiery series this time round.

"I think it'll be played in good spirit,” Smith said in Chennai, where his side will face a local XI tomorrow in the only warm-up before the series starts in the same city.

"It's always a hard-fought contest playing against India.”

Kohli managed just 46 runs at an average of 9.2 - his lowest in any Test series - in February and March.

He has since returned to form, finishing a recent limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka with knocks of 82, 110no and 131 and Smith said he expected more of the same from the Indian superstar.

"He is obviously a very good player and has a phenomenal ODI record,” he said.

"Hopefully we can keep him quiet as much as possible in this series.

"If we do that then hopefully it can go a long way in us having success on this tour.”

India has left out spin-twins Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin for the first three matches of the one-day series.
