Nurse of 43 years retires on same day as St Stephen's M'boro

IT WAS a nostalgic day for nurse Pat Popp who retired on the same day the St Stephen's hospital in Maryborough which she worked for shut its doors to the public.

The registered nurse's final job was to transfer nine patients to the new St Stephen's hospital in Hervey Bay.

After working at the hospital for 43 years, Mrs Popp and other dedicated staff have to say goodbye to a hospital that they have fought to keep open.

"I'm glad to have been able to see the opening of the new hospital and help move patients," she said.

"It's a really nice facility and I think it will be great for our patients and our staff."

On her future plans, it's all about spending time with the family.

"I'm looking forward to spending more time with my three grandchildren and having more time to myself," she said.

"Though I am sad to leave, I wish the staff and patients the very best for the future in the new hospital in Hervey Bay."
