SLASS is the profile for this week on the Senior Matters list of organisations available to help you become more active and aware.
What does your organisation do?
Seniors Legal and Support Service works with people over the age of 60 who are experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, elder abuse or financial exploitation.
At any one time the service deals with about 40 cases in the Fraser Coast local government area.
As a multidisciplinary service SLASS employs support counsellors to work in conjunction with solicitors to assist clients.
Has your membership increased due to Senior Matters stories?
A large number of clients who self-refer to our service report that they read about SLASS in the local newspaper.
Are there any particular special events/activities you have during the year?
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be held on June 15, 2014.
Our service usually runs a series of television ads around this time and newspaper articles are also welcome as a means to get the message out about the prevalence of elder abuse in the local community.
Who is your contact?
SLASS is a program of the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre. To find out more information on the service, contact SLASS manager/principal solicitor Melissa Seymour Dearness on 4124 6863 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
