Miracle baby Alexcia Buchanan celebrates first birthday
TODAY Maryborough's Jerremy Buchanan and Katrina Johnstone will celebrate their daughter Alexcia's first birthday.
It is a day they weren't sure would arrive after their daughter was diagnosed with serious heart defects soon after she was born.
During her birthday party on Saturday, their little fighter smiled, laughed and played with wrapping paper, surrounded by family and friends.
She was just like any other one-year-old, playing with her brother Bryce and enjoying the company of other kids.
But her parents know how special her story of survival is.
The weeks following Alexcia's birth saw her undergo major open heart surgery to correct the defects.
She came through the six-hour operation with flying colours but an infection and excessive fluid meant doctors couldn't close her chest for days after the operation.
She will have to undergo even more surgery as she grows.
On November 14, Alexcia underwent her most recent surgery in Brisbane when surgeons put a stent in the artificial part of her heart, which will give her time to grow without having to undergo open heart surgery again just yet.
Katrina said one of the most special parts of Alexcia's story was the way the Fraser Coast community had thrown its support behind her and her family.
Jerremy and Katrina stayed with their daughter in Brisbane during her operation and the support of both individuals and businesses helped them greatly at that time.
Katrina said the family remained incredibly grateful for the generosity of spirit that had been shown to them.
The family was also thankful for Ronald McDonald House, which had also been very supportive during Alexcia's surgeries.
